What Knocks Our Socks Off? – Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University

UPDATE!  The winner is Nick A!!!  Congrats and best of luck to ALL on your journey!  I think my year has already been made, knowing that so many of you have resolved to do it.  You’ll not regret it!  Thanks to the Wildermans and Mitchells for sharing their accomplishments.  YOU ROCK!

There’s one more gift left this season — it’s one to give yourself and your family.  One that will bless you for many years.  It will make you wiser; it will make you better.  It will light a spark and can change your life.  Really!  It IS the gift that keeps on giving.  And it’s one we gave ourselves a little over a year ago.  It’s Financial Peace University, and it knocked our socks off.  We believe it’s so great that we want to give one of our Bloggersock readers FREE TUITION!  So read on…

In this month’s issue of Real Simple magazine (awesome mag, by the way!), the following thought is shared: “Wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants.” -Ester De Waal, Seeking God: The Way of St. Benedict

Now doesn’t that say it all?  Sure makes it easier to live.  Sure frees you to do the things you really want to do.  Our insatiable desire for more, for bigger, for better is grotesque in many cases.  Gluttony has spread far too wide, and it’s become way too normal to the point that we’ve lost all focus; we don’t even get it.

Thankfully, financial literacy is making a comeback, and it’s time to get on the bus!  Single or married; children or none; deep in debt or not at all — we say everyone can benefit from gaining the knowledge and experience of FPU.  While the FPU lessons are not all that earth-shattering (and you may have heard them before), they are presented in a way that forces you out of the haze, that shows you how to live outside the norm.  Learning to live with fiscal responsibility is a course everyone should take and pass.  And learning alongside your spouse, partner, family member or classmate is the powerful key to this education.  It’s like an exercise buddy — get one, and your chances of success increase greatly.  If you aren’t on the same page as another in your household, it’s a problem.  Solve it.

Classes are offered through a local church.  Find a class in your area here.  Then make a commitment to yourself, along with your spouse (if applicable), that you want to “live like no one else” as Dave so aptly puts it.  TO WIN TUITION ($99), LEAVE A COMMENT HERE WITH THE DATE AND LOCATION OF YOUR CLASS, ALONG WITH YOUR AFFIRMATIVE STATEMENT TO GO!  We will pick ONE commenter at random on New Year’s Day, so get your comments in before then!

If you are a FPU supporter and/or have enjoyed the experience, please share your inspiration too!

Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University-100

January 29, 2010 - 10:24 am Sarah Brenton Smith - Jen, I found your website through our mutual high school friends and think it looks great! When I saw this post, I felt I needed to write you. I work as the Office Manager for my Dad, David Brenton at David Brenton's Team- RE/MAX Select. My Dad is one of the three Realtors that have the Dave Ramsey seal of approval for the Southside/Greenwood Area. He has taken FPU and been trained as a Dave Ramsey ELP. We think it is so important for people to understand their financial goals when dealing with Real Estate. If you or anyone you know have real estate questions and want to work with someone trained with a FPU train of thought, please give me a call, I would be happy to help. 317-698-7211. And best of luck with your photography, I have already passed your information along to a couple planning a summer wedding. Take Care, Sarah

January 1, 2010 - 6:39 am Tom Kuhltckuhl@verizon.net - One of my goals for 2010 is to restore my financial freedom that I lost so many years ago to credit card debt, impulse spending, and just plain ignorance. I have come a long way in the last 20 years, but still am crawling out of the hole, which I sometimes to seem to keep slipping. Being financially sound is at the top of my list for 2010. Phyllis and I have already signed up for the class. I am excited, pumped, and ready for the challenge. God has always blessed me over the years, and has seen me through every stuggle. This has been one mountian that I thought I could never get over, but am convinced that this mountain can finally be leveled. You two are definitely an inspiration, along with the other success stories posted here. Love ya!!

December 31, 2009 - 9:00 pm phyllis - You guys are starting to convenience me that this Dave Ramsey may have something to say that I could use. It is another new year and so it is time once again to think of how to make personal improvements and change things in my life that I've been thinking of changing for many new years past. I'm not asking for the tuition, I just need a gentle push from you guys every now and then to get me going in the right direction. I will look to see where a class is that is close and see if Tom wants to join me. I love you two, mom.

December 31, 2009 - 10:20 am Scott and Dana Mitchell - Hey Guys! We graduated from FPU a few weeks ago and have paid off $42,000 in debt in just 13 weeks (selling our car helped...who needs it? We haven't even missed it.) We are instructing the next session at Pathway Community Church in Feb. in Fort Wayne. What a great way to start 2010 for someone! We just needed someone to tell us to stop the spending and use cash...not debit. It's amazing that we have been doing this and all of a sudden everything else just fell into place. Our house is always clean, our finances always organized, our bills are now paid 3 weeks early and our family is so much happier. We used to clean on Sat. and now we honestly wake up and have to find things to do. The best part is that our kids are doing FPU Jr. and they have given so much of their earnings to the Lord and to his people who need it. We are changing our family tree and I am so thankful the Lord put us on this path. Thank you for giving someone else this opportunity! Take care! Love you both...Scott and Dana

December 30, 2009 - 4:14 pm Nick Andrews - Jennifer, I have signed up for the FPU Class at St. Barnabas starting January 18th. I already have Baby Step 1 completed and have paid off a few of the smaller debts in Baby Step 2 the Debt Snowball! I have picked up several extra hours of overtime and am starting to run at gazelle-intense speed. Thanks. Nick

December 29, 2009 - 8:11 pm jen bowersock - Yeaa! I love all of your comments!! I just get pumped up thinking about it. way to go Justin and Sunny, and THANK YOU for sharing your inspiring accomplishment!

December 29, 2009 - 9:04 am Sunny - P.S. Credit Cards Reek!

December 29, 2009 - 9:04 am Sunny - Justin and I did FPU a few years ago at our old church... and we LOVED it! We paid off over $20,000 in debt in about 13 months! We got off track a little bit and we are refocusing on FPU with the new year, and best of all... his family is doing it with us! We actually have the instructor kit, so we won't be needing tuition or what not. But you guys are awesome for helping to make FPU a reality for a lucky person.

December 28, 2009 - 8:19 pm Lauren (Crafton) Wang - I saw your post on FB.. thanks for sharing. I immediately talked John into committing Wednesday evenings to FPU at Crossroads Christian Church in West Lafayette (a little teeth pulling a arm twisting was used :P). I am so excited to learn to live for what we need and less for what we want. Financial Peace in 2010 is affirmation statement. Thanks again for sharing! I am passing along the info to my friends as well. Happy New Year, Lauren

December 28, 2009 - 7:23 pm Michalina Peterson - Dale & I affirm that we would love to become more financially stable! What a great way to start the new year. If we are the first to leave a comment, does that guarentee us 2 tickets in the hat? JJ. Dave Ramsey classes are located at Wabash Valley Bible Baptist Church here in Attica! beginning Jan. 17th. (Didn't see any disclosure about family, hope we're eligible). Love you two, Michalina
